The Red Deer Riggers split their games on the opening day of the Baseball Canada National Men’s Championship in Victoria, B.C.

The Riggers got off to a great start to the tournament with a 8-0 win over Ilderton, Ontario’s second entry in the tournament.

Pitcher Josh Edwards was superb for Red Deer in tossing a complete game, seven-inning shutout in which he gave up just seven hits.

Red Deer piled up 15 hits in the win. JP Wilner had two RBIs while Jason Chatwood, Jason Louis, Ty Russell, Shayne Court and Denver Wik had one each.

In their second game of the day, the Riggers were downed 7-2 by the Coquitlam Angels.

Matthew Hammond was hammered with the loss on the mound as he allowed 11 hits and seven earned runs in four and two thirds innings. Wilner and Louis had RBIs for the Riggers.

The Riggers play one game Friday versus Newfoundland and Labrador at 4 p.m. MT.

The Sunburst Baseball League announced its 2018 All-Star Team this week. Several Riggers players made the grade: shortstop Jason Chatwood, third baseman Jaret Chatwood, second baseman Denver Wik and catcher Curtis Mazurkewich. Josh Edwards was named the league’s top pitcher.
