WATCH: Health Minister Hoffman reaffirms commitment to investing healthcare dollars in Red Deer

A needs assessment for the expansion of hospital services in Red Deer is yet to make its way into the hands of Alberta’s Health Minister.

Sarah Hoffman commented on the ongoing process for hospital expansion while in Sylvan Lake on Friday to tour the new Advanced Ambulatory Care Centre.

“We know Red Deer has needs and we expect they’ve grown even since the last three or four years,” she said, noting the $1 million in the province’s recent budget to formulate a business case. “Red Deer is growing, so is central Alberta and we want to make sure we have the right plans so we can inform good decision-making and the right investment for capital for Red Deer.”

The minister was also asked what she would tell people who say they are sick of hearing about assessments.

“Instead of cutting and firing, we’re building and we’re hiring. We know Albertans don’t want to carry more debt than is necessary, we get that, and I don’t want to either,” she said. “We don’t want things to be delayed and we want to make sure that we’ve got the right space being built to meet the needs of the people in the region.”

The needs assessment should be on Hoffman’s desk in the coming weeks and will eventually be made public.
