WATCH: Victims and Survivors of Crime Week – Rights of Victims

May 28, 2018 | 11:46 AM

n an effort to raise awareness of National Victims and Survivors of Crime Week, rdnewsNOW is taking a look at three different facets of what is available to someone when they become a victim.

A victim is defined as a person who has been hurt physically, emotionally, or has lost property or money because of a crime, according to the Central Alberta Sexual Assault Support Centre.

In Alberta, there are two pieces of legislation which protect the rights of victims, the federal Victims Bill of Rights and the provincial Victims of Crime Act.

“These two important pieces of legislation provide rights for victims and the Victims Bill of Rights covers information which victims have a right to, their participation in the criminal justice system, protection and restitution,” says Sarah Maetche, Administrative Assistant with the Support Centre.

Among other things, the CVBR ensures information to victims about services available, about an offender’s conditional release, regarding an offender’s progress in relation to their correctional plan, and the offender’s release date.

If you believe you are a victim or know someone who is, visit CASASC.ca or your local victim services unit.
