Sep 19, 2018 | 11:07 AM

Bail has been denied for a Red Deer man charged with shooting a man who interrupted a break and enter in Anders last year.

Darren Curtis Lagrelle, 22, is charged with aggravated assault, uttering threats, robbery with a weapon and break and enter in relation to the Sept. 12, 2017 incident.

During the noon hour that day, police say a suspect was carrying a short-barrel small calibre firearm and a machete while breaking into a home on Asmundsen Avenue.

The man who interrupted the break in suffered a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to his back and a number of cuts during a struggle with the suspect.

Lagrelle was denied bail following a hearing in Red Deer court last week. His trial was originally slated for this month but is now scheduled to take place March 1-4, 2019.

In Feb. 2017, Lagrelle was handed a three-year prison sentence, which included credit for time spent in custody prior to pleading guilty, and a lifetime firearms ban for an incident at a north Red Deer hotel in 2015 where a man was held at gunpoint and had the word “Snitch” burned into his chest with a hot knife.

Trial will take place in May for a former professional basketball player charged with trafficking drugs in Red Deer.

Jarrett Albert Hart was arrested by Red Deer RCMP in July and charged with three counts of possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking, and one count of possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000. He has pleaded not guilty and will stand trial on May 6, 2019.

Hart was born in London, England and raised in Arkansas. He played professional basketball in Cyprus and was a member of the Great Britain national team.

A former Western Hockey League player from Lacombe and his co-accused have pleaded not guilty to drug trafficking-related counts.

Jordan Hale, 28, and Mack Hawthorne, 23, are each charged with possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking and count of possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000.

They were arrested July 10 after Mounties executed a search warrant at a home in Sunnybrook and seized cocaine and cash.

Hale and Hawthorne will face a preliminary hearing in Red Deer provincial court on April 29, 2019.

Hale played with the Brandon Wheat Kings of the WHL from 2007-2010.

A Red Deer man charged with ramming into a police cruiser with a stolen truck during a pursuit this past June will spend several months behind bars.

Cody Feil, 30, stood trial last week and was convicted on counts of possession of stolen property under $5000, theft under $5000 and operating a motor vehicle while disqualified. He was sentenced to eight months in jail and handed a three-year driving ban.

It was at about 1:30 p.m. on June 5 when City Mounties responded to a report of a stolen truck parked in Riverside Meadows. RCMP boxed in the truck to prevent it fleeing police, and the male suspect standing at the truck then entered it and used it to ram the driver’s door of the police cruiser while an officer was behind the wheel. The suspect then exited the truck through the open passenger window and attempted to flee on foot before being arrested.

During the arrest, RCMP seized two stolen cheques, brass knuckles, a knife, and several pellet and BB guns that the suspect was prohibited by court order from possessing. Police also seized bolt cutters and other tools known to be used in vehicle break-ins, and several stolen identity documents.

Preliminary hearings have been scheduled for three people charged in a home invasion earlier this year in Rimbey.

In the early morning of April 13, RCMP say two males were woken in a residence when four suspects entered and assaulted them, resulting in minor injuries. Rimbey RCMP with the assistance of Red Deer Forensic Identification Section responded to investigate and identified three of the four suspects. Police believe it was a targeted attack.

Tyson Richard Ethier, 24, of Sylvan Lake, Samantha Leone Lewis, 32, of Ponoka and Jimmy Delane Morsette, 30, of Blackfalds each face several charges including aggravated assault, forcible confinement, uttering threats.

Ethier and Lewis will face a preliminary hearing in Rimbey provincial court on Oct. 23 while Morsette’s hearing is slated for Nov. 7.

Police continue to investigate in their bid to identify the fourth suspect involved in the home invasion.

One of three men charged in relation to a drug trafficking operation at Bowden Institution faces a preliminary hearing.

Innisfail RCMP say that on Nov. 5, 2017 a former inmate released from the prison in September was located and detained after a suspicious person was observed near the fence at the medium security facility.

The incident led to a lockdown at the prison that lasted until Nov. 14, allowing for staff to conduct a thorough search of the facility. Staff confiscated packages of contraband containing THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and methamphetamine valued at nearly $500,000.

Cory Michaels faces trafficking-related charges and has a preliminary hearing scheduled in Red Deer provincial court Oct. 28.

Alan Goossens pleaded guilty in June to possession for the purpose of trafficking and possession of a controlled substance. He was sentenced to 14 months behind bars, 12 months’ probation and fined $300.

Charges against the third man charged, Jesse Cole, have been stayed.
