Final countdown on to CFR 45 in Red Deer

In just two weeks the Canadian Finals Rodeo will hit the dirt in Red Deer for the first time.

After 44 years in Edmonton, CFR 45 goes at the Enmax Centrium from Oct. 30 – Nov. 4.

Westerner Park interim CEO Bradley Williams says everyone is ready to put on an “absolutely amazing show” for Red Deer and central Alberta.

“We’re ready to go,” Williams said at media conference Tuesday at the Westerner Park Holiday Inn Chalet. “We’re (in) the last stages of planning, everything looks solid. We’ve got a great team working on it, we’ve got great support from (the Canadian Professional Rodeo Association).”

Barrel racer Shayna Weir of Ponoka is excited to compete on home turf in her first CFR appearance.

“I’ll quite enjoy being close to home,” Weir said. “I can travel back and forth. My horse will enjoy being home every night so it will be a lot easier on her.”

Weir has never competed at the Enmax Centrium but is hopeful to have success when the time comes.

“It’ll be different, it’ll be a new experience and it’ll be something to figure out,” she said.

Williams says those looking for last-minute tickets to the rodeo are probably out of luck.

“We might have the odd single ticket around right now. But we’ve got basically the seats sold out. Edmonton didn’t get to enjoy that. We’re going to be absolutely full from Tuesday night through to Sunday afternoon.”

Williams is confident Red Deer will set the bar high with room to go even higher.

“Not in any way to diminish this year, but I think next year will be even better with a full year to work on it. I can tell you that the minute we shut down on Sunday afternoon we’ll start planning for next year,”he surmised.

“We’re grateful for all the City of Edmonton and partners have built in the past, and we will do our absolute best to build on it, not only for this year, but for the decade to come,” said Red Deer mayor Tara Veer. “Whenever we host a major event our community rallies together.”
