Jail time for man who drove stolen semi from Red Deer to Airdrie

Jul 20, 2018 | 6:50 PM

The man involved in a dangerous semi-tractor pursuit from Red Deer to Airdrie earlier this year will serve time behind bars.

Brandon Moench, 35-years-old and of no fixed address, was sentenced on Thursday to 30 months in jail, and was also handed a 10-year firearms prohibition.

He was charged with two counts of failing to remain at the scene of an accident, operation of a motor vehicle while being pursued by police, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, assault of a peace officer, possession of stolen property over $5,000, two counts of failing to comply with a recognizance, failing to comply with a demand by a peace officer and uttering threats to cause bodily harm.

RCMP say the incident began on March 23 around 9:45 p.m. when Airdrie detacment were alerted to a semi failing to stop for police. They say it was travelling south on the QEII from near Didsbury and there was a concern for public safety due to the manner it was being driven.

RCMP later learned that that semi had been stolen from the Domino’s Pizza parking lot in downtown Red Deer earlier that evening and was used to smash into parked vehicles and the outdoor patio of the Indian Kitchen Bar and Grill.

Police say the semi continued to be driven dangerously with members trying to stop it by using a spike belt. Despite damaging the front tires, it was able to continue moving.

Several area detachments became involved, as well as the police dog unit.

The semi eventually turned onto Highway 2A and went through Crossfield before arriving in Airdrie.

There, the RCMP Emergency Response Team (ERT), the Calgary Police Service HAWCS helicopter and CPS TAC were also deployed to assist. The joint tactical intervention was used to finally stop the semi on 40 Avenue in Airdrie.

Thankfully, no one was hurt.
