Coal Transition funds announced for new employment centre in Castor

One of two new transition centres to support communities during the phasing out of coal will be situated in the town of Castor.

Federal Minister of Natural Resources Amarjeet Sohi made the announcement on Friday in Edmonton.

An investment of more than $257,000 is being made through the Canada Coal Transition Initiative for the project.

“We understand a successful transition to the low-carbon economy includes supporting workers and communities,” Sohi said. “This is why I am so pleased the funding announced today will help establish two transition centres to provide resources and services to residents in seven communities in the Battle River region.”

Funding will be used to convert two existing office spaces into transition centres in Castor and Forestburg. The centres will support entrepreneurship and employment services.

Further, they will support former coal miners, generating station workers and community members with new employment, training programs and entrepreneurial development services.

According to a release from the Government of Canada, Alberta still produces approximately 50 per cent of its electricity from coal-fired electric generation.

The Government of Canada has established and signed the Powering Past Coal Alliance, which brings together various stakeholders united in taking action to accelerate clean growth and climate protection through the rapid phase-out of unabated coal power, the release adds.
