Witness shares account of fatal stabbing outside Red Deer pub
The Crown called an eyewitness to testify Wednesday morning at the second degree murder trial of Daniel Boyd Sawyer.
The 34-year-old is charged in the Nov. 18, 2015 stabbing death of Allan Beach outside the Blarney Stone pub at Village Mall in north Red Deer. Sawyer’s jury trial got underway last week in Red Deer Court of Queen’s Bench.
Daniel Cooper, who also goes by the name Daniel Mireault, told court he was having drinks with Beach and his girlfriend at the pub when they went outside for a cigarette. That’s when Beach became involved in an argument with another man, Bill Georgopolous (known as “Greek”), who said Beach’s brother owed him $15,000 for drugs.
Georgopolous punched Beach in the face while he had a cigarette in his mouth, Cooper told court. He then pulled Beach’s shirt over his head before two other men jumped in to start beating on him. One of those men, Sawyer, stabbed Beach in the leg. Cooper then saw dark red fluid flow down Beach’s pant leg.
