Council looks to save Parsons House through MOU with province

Red Deer city council is looking to preserve historic Parsons House through a memorandum of understanding with the province.

Situated in downtown Red Deer, Parsons House sits on the corner of the property at 48 Avenue and 49 Street, which is where a new justice centre will soon be built.

The province purchased the land and the building in June of this year, but is yet to announce the fate of the house which most recently home to a law firm.

It is designated as a Municipal Historic Resource under the Alberta Historic Resources Act, and has held that distinction since 1990.

On Monday, council will debate and seek to approve an MOU with the province, largely based on significant public support for the house’s preservation.

The MOU, as proposed, suggests the province maintain ownership of Parsons House or consider selling it to The City of Red Deer for $1.

The City would agree to oversee property management, leasing and operations, fund minor repairs and maintenance, and would occupy the house for public purposes or lease to a tenant that is acceptable to the province.

The province would fund all major maintenance and take all reasonable measures to address the structural integrity of Parsons House during construction of the Red Deer Justice Centre.

According to an administrative report, the province has concerns with the building’s security and aesthetics.
