MEDICINE HAT, AB — With Christmas just around the corner, choosing gifts for friends and family is in the centre of many peoples minds.

2018 has proven a little different, there’s a new gift on the markets, especially in Alberta.

Gifting cannabis has proven to be a popular present this Christmas, whether it’s dried bud, concentrates, or paraphernalia.

“We’re definitely seeing some sales, related around that area, lots of good gift ideas, gift exchange ideas,” says Jasper Williams, sales associate at the Green Exchange, a Medicine Hat cannabis shop. “Just you know and just something to be able to enjoy the holidays a little differently this year.”

In Canada’s first legalized Christmas, a recent poll by marketing outfit Lift and Co one in 10 Canadians will be wrapping bud for a buddy this holiday season.

They surveyed 1,512 random Canadians, and found people from Alberta and Manitoba are the most likely to gift cannabis at 12 per cent, while people from Quebec are the least likely to give, at 8 per cent.

In addition, men are twice as likely to gift cannabis as women, sitting at 14 percent.

The survey says 20 per cent of millennials said they’d be purchasing it as a gift, as opposed to Gen-Xers at 14 per cent.

“This is a very busy time of year so it’s a great way to be able to kind of slow down,” says Williams. “Just gives people another alternative to alcohol or things like that.”
