Red Deer Airport riding wave of momentum into 2019

After a successful 2018, 2019 is shaping up to be a potentially huge year for the Red Deer Airport.

CEO Graham Ingham tells rdnewsNOW a recent announcement from ultra low-cost carrier (ULCC) Enerjet that they are officially moving ahead with operations is likely to have huge implications for Red Deer and central Alberta.

“As a low-cost secondary airport, we are in a great position to capitalize on these opportunities, specifically with Red Deer and our access to what amounts to about three million people within 80 minutes,” Ingham says. “It’s these types of opportunities that really represent the future of the Red Deer Airport.”

While Enerjet, which is led by Westjet co-founder Tim Morgan, hasn’t yet committed to any markets, Ingham says they’ve shown strong interest in Red Deer. The two parties have been building a relationship over the last two years, he notes.

“At this point, I’m quite optimistic that at some point we could see Enerjet operating in and out of the Red Deer Airport,” Ingham predicts.

In order to accommodate an ULCC such as Enerjet, the airport must move ahead with a capital project to expand the terminal and apron, something Ingham says they’re waiting to get the go-ahead on.

“Over the last nine months, we’ve completed all the engineering and design work for our apron and terminal expansion. We are hoping to kick that off sometime early in the spring and that’s about a six month project,” he explains. “That should put us sometime around September or October.”

Among other things, the airport will also see an increase of charter traffic during the 2019 Canada Winter Games, and they anticipate a re-launch of their website in the spring, as well as the installation of a new standby generator and additional security cameras.

Last year was a record-breaking year for the Red Deer Airport, according to Ingham, with 80,000 take-offs and landings. That makes the airport the fourth busiest in Alberta.

“Financially we held our own which is really, really good. 2019 is going to be a little tough, but we’re pretty positive that the future of the airport is looking pretty good,” Ingham continues.

“We continued to make a strong presence in the community; we participated in a lot of events, and supported a lot of people not only in Red Deer, but in central Alberta. This past year we raised just over $14000 dollars for charity and next year we’re anticipating doubling that at least.”
