Alberta advances to semifinals in men’s hockey

Feb 20, 2019 | 10:14 PM

Team Alberta blew out team New Brunswick 8-3 Wednesday night at the Centrium to advance to the men’s hockey semifinals.

The two teams traded goals early on in the game before it ended up being 4-3 for Alberta at the end of a wild first period. Alberta added four more goals in the second period on their way to victory.

Alberta goaltender Lochlan Gordon gave up three goals on eight shots and was pulled after 20 minutes. Drew Sim stopped all 11 shots he faced in relief.

Alberta’s offence was buzzing all night with Tyson Laventure and Matt Savoie each scoring two goals in the game.

“The first one was just top of the zone, walked in and got a lucky shot through a couple guys, goalie didn’t see it so it was good,” says Savoie. “Second one on the power play, we had a good screen in front, two layers and it just found its way through.”

Offence has been a key element to Alberta’s game throughout the entire tournament and Savoie explains how the team has been able to play so well together.

“I think the boys are bought in real well to their roles and everyone’s contributing offensively and defensively so it’s been good playing with these guys.”

Alberta’s semifinal opponent will be Team Ontario after they beat Manitoba 6-3 on Wednesday night.

Laventure is confident in his team’s ability to compete with Ontario.

“I think we’ve been doing great getting our game going later on, always had a strong third period and being able to come out with the wins. Just hoping to bring home the gold now.”

Alberta and Ontario will battle on Thursday night at 7:30 at the Centrium to decide who will play for gold Friday night.
