Crime mapping pilot proposed for Red Deer

Mar 1, 2019 | 8:06 AM

Red Deer city council will be asked on Monday to approve a one year pilot project to make crime mapping data in the city available to the public.

The RCMP recently developed a web-based platform to share crime stats publicly. Municipalities now have the option to make the crime mapping available to the public in varying degrees.

Most municipalities in Alberta are currently making some form of public crime mapping available. RCMP detachments in St. Albert, Innisfail, Sylvan Lake, Fort Saskatchewan, Spruce Grove, Leduc, Wetaskiwin, Grande Prairie, Ft. McMurray, and Airdrie are doing so, as are non-RCMP police services in Edmonton, Calgary, Lethbridge, and Medicine Hat.

City Manager Craig Curtis is recommending that council approve the utilization of the RCMP crime mapping tool for Red Deer and to make it available publically as a one year pilot, followed by a report assessing the impacts of the pilot.

RCMP crime mapping provides crime data for the last 14 days of data. The crime types that can be presented are theft from motor vehicle, theft of motor vehicle, break & enter, theft over/under $5000, mischief, and missing persons. Mapping locations are generalized so specific addresses are not identifiable.

There is no direct cost to the City of Red Deer to utilize the RCMP Crime Mapping site. There will be administrative costs as the local data will have to be entered daily at the detachment, which is expected to take about one hour per day of staff time based on the current level of crime files in Red Deer.
