Major contraband seizure at Bowden Institution

Mar 12, 2019 | 12:35 PM

A staff and RCMP investigation has been launched into the seizure of contraband worth hundreds of thousands of dollars at the Bowden Institution on Monday.

Officials with the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) say packages containing crystal methamphetamine, “shatter” (THC concentrate), and two cell phones were seized thanks to the vigilance of staff at the facility’s minimum security unit.

The total institutional value of the seizure is estimated at $384,000.

Officials say CSC is heightening its measures to prevent contraband from entering its institutions in order to help ensure a safe and secure environment for everyone.

CSC is also working in partnership with police to take action against those who attempt to bring contraband into correctional institutions.

As a result, CSC has set up a telephone tip line for all federal institutions so that it may receive additional information about activities relating to security at CSC institutions.

These activities may be related to drug use or trafficking that may threaten the safety and security of visitors, inmates and staff members working at CSC institutions.

The toll-free number, 1‑866‑780‑3784, helps ensure that the information shared is protected and that callers remain anonymous.
