EDMONTON- A woman in her 60s who was swept away after taking a dip in the North Saskatchewan River clung to a bridge post for about eight hours before she was rescued.

Police say the woman walked down to the river on Saturday night to wade in and cool down from the heat.

Sergeant Jerrid Maze says the current dragged her downstream for some distance before she was able to grab the post in waist-high water.

The woman was discovered Sunday around 6:30 a.m. and picked up by a rescue boat before she was taken to hospital for treatment of hypothermia and released.
