RDC showcases over 100 programs at Open House

Nov 4, 2017 | 4:01 PM

Roughly 1,300 prospective students and their families attended an Open House held at Red Deer College on Saturday.

It was an event described as informative and interactive for anyone graduating from high school or simply looking at different career options.

Guests had an opportunity to learn more about the over 100 programs RDC offers and also discover the wide array of student services available.

The event featured program tours and displays, campus tours, residence tours and visits to the science and health labs or trade shops for hands-on demonstrations and activities.

People interested in programs offered at the Donald School of Business in downtown Red Deer were also able to learn more at an information booth located on Main Campus or at the facility itself to gain a better perspective.

New this year was ‘Career Corner,’ an interactive and personalized opportunity at both the Main and Downtown campus for people to get assistance with the first steps of planning their careers through career assessments and advice.

RDC President Joel Ward says there are many types of programs to choose from, including Trades and Technologies, with one-year certificate and two-year diploma programs that enable students to come in and get very specific training and get right back to work.

“Early Childhood Education, Health Care Aide, Practical Nurse, those kinds of programs,” explained Ward. “Then of course we also have many of our degree programs in collaboration with other institutions in Education, Nursing, Business, Sociology, Psychology and so on. So we’re a little bit of everything, from one-year to four-year programs.”

Ward says it’s great to see so many visitors at the Open House, as many are impressed with the multiple expansion projects underway.

“When you drive in, you really can’t help but notice the Gary W. Harris Canada Winter Games Centre. The lights are on now, the people can see it all at night, it’s an extraordinary facility and a lot of students are very interested in what’s going to go on in there,” continued Ward.

He also points to construction underway on a new apartment-style Student Residence building and Alternative Energy Lab which will lead to new energy programs like solar, wind and geo-thermal technologies.

“When they come here, they see great facilities, they see great programs and they see a college that’s growing. When you walk onto this campus, it’s not something that hasn’t changed, it’s changed dramatically and everywhere they turn, it’s construction, there’s a crane, there’s something going on,” said Ward. “They get a sense that this is the place to come because there’s lots going on and lots of opportunity both in facilities and programs.”

Dr. Paulette Hanna is Vice President of Academic at RDC and says the Open House is a great way to showcase everything the College has to offer, including its over 100 programs.

“Students come here for Pre-Employment, for Certificates, Diplomas, Collaborative Degrees, Applied Degrees and of course our Trades, the Apprenticeship Program,” said Hanna. “It’s targeting High School Graduates, so anybody Grade 10, 11 and 12 but also, Red Deer College has programs for people that are looking for a career change and there’s opportunities here for them as well.”

Hanna says the Donald School of Business also has new programs, such as the Human Resource Graduate Certificate.

“It’s targeting people that already have a degree and they want to get into the Human Resource profession,” explains Hanna. “They take this one-year program and it’s offered executive weekends and online, it’s a bit of a blend. By completing the program, they are certified as a Human Resource professional, so it’s a great opportunity.”
