Pacific fish spill doesn’t pose concerns for Nova Scotia operations:minister
HALIFAX — The spill of thousands of Atlantic salmon at a Cooke Aquaculture farm in Washington state poses no concerns for the company’s operations in Nova Scotia, the province’s aquaculture minister said Thursday.
Keith Colwell said Cooke uses different pen technology than that used at the company’s facility near Cypress Island in Washington State. State officials have said an estimated 1,360 tonnes of Atlantic salmon were in a net that imploded on Saturday.
“We’ve got newer technology in the cages here in Nova Scotia so we really are not concerned about it,” said Colwell. “There are a couple of sites that have that same cage technology but they are laying fallow, no fish in them.”
Colwell said his department has regulations that will take effect within “the next few months” requiring modern cage designs for fish farms.
