Man assaulted, has van stolen after helping two others

Mounties in Red Deer are looking for two men who assaulted a man and stole his van after he offered them a ride.

The incident happened around 7 a.m. on May 14 (Sunday). Two males approached the other in the parking lot of Johnstone Plaza on 67 Street. They had a friendly conversation before asking for a ride, telling the would-be victim they were late for work.

When the driver dropped them off on nearby 67 Avenue, the suspects assaulted him, took his wallet, cell phone and keys, and drove away with the van.

Police say one suspect had a large knife, but did not use it, while the other used what is believed to be a baton or pry bar. The victim suffered a hard blow to the head and other injuries to his face. He was taken to hospital for treatment, then released.

– 20 to 25-years-old
– Short brown hair
– Slim build
– Acne on his face and a noticeable scar or injury on the left side of his nose
– Wearing a black hat with black sunglasses on the brim, a grey hooded sweater, blue jeans and white shoes

The second suspect is described as:

– Aboriginal
– 25 to 30-years-old
– Short dark hair
– Medium build
– Tattoo on his left cheek
– Wearing a dark hooded sweater, dark pants and red shoes

The van that was stolen from the victim, a light brown 1997 GMC Safari, was located by police Tuesday night on Reinhart Avenue in Red Deer following a tip from the public. Police say the van bore a different Alberta license plate, which was also confirmed stolen out of Red Deer.
