High winds wreak havoc along highway near Bashaw

Sep 2, 2017 | 11:29 PM

‘Extremely high winds’ wreaked havoc along a portion of Highway 53 east of Bashaw Saturday evening.

RCMP say the gusts caused calcium chloride, which is naturally occurring along the highway, to be kicked up which caused reduced visibility in the area.

While visibility was less than ideal, a four-vehicle collision occurred. Only minor injuries were sustained.

Earlier on, RCMP had believed a semi carrying chemical had been involved in a single-vehicle rollover.

They later confirmed there was no semi involved and that the chemical was not from a spill.

Bashaw and Stettler Mounties also say they were forced to diligently inform residents and visitors at the summer villages of Rochon Sands and White Sands, as well as others camping nearby at Buffalo Lake, that a weather event was occurring.

Mounties say the public was calm and cooperated with police direction.

There are no reports of any injuries caused by the wind, though there is extensive damage to property which will be assessed better in the daylight hours, according to police.
