Normandeau Elementary hoping to win sweet prize from Samsung

Jun 1, 2017 | 3:26 PM

Normandeau Elementary School is in the running for a pretty cool technology grant package from Samsung.

The Solve for Tomorrow Challenge asked Canadian students in grade six through 12 to identify issues in their communities and develop solutions using science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

As a regional finalist, Normandeau is now one step closer to winning one of four $20,000 prizes of Samsung gear for one of the school’s classrooms. They could also receive a chance to attend an exclusive event with Canadian rocket scientist Natalie Panek.

“Our school has the challenge of students with less opportunity to explore the world of science than other students of higher socioeconomic status do. Through using Samsung technology and apps, our school can bring science to them, thus sparking an interest in the school of thought known as science,” says Sheila Fowler-Greene, Normandeau Vice-Principal.

“We can get them to wonder why, and wonder “what if” using technology available through Samsung. This will produce a stronger interest in science and lead to life goals relating to the field of science.”

To qualify, the school had to provide Samsung with an essay on how they could benefit from winning. Now they must create a three minute video showing how they can improve their school using STEM and the Samsung equipment.

Regional winners will be announced June 19.
