“Ringo” the therapy dog leads Notre Dame grads down the aisle

Jun 30, 2017 | 2:50 PM

“Ringo” the therapy dog had his day in the spotlight, leading the Notre Dame graduating class of 2017 down the aisle Friday at the Enmax Centrium.

The over 500 grads raised close to $40,000 this year in order to pay for the black lab to be trained and become a full-time presence for Red Deer RCMP Victim Services.

Constable Holly Erb says the fact young people chose Victim Services as their grad service project speaks volumes about the compassion and foresight they have.

“They looked at this and saw it could be a service that is so needed and utilized by our community and outlying communities. All it will do is go to assist people in their rehabilitation after being a victim of a crime,” she said.

“We couldn’t imagine the amount of time and work these students have put into it. It was some time ago that I was in school, but I know schoolwork and outside jobs takes a lot of their time, so they put that extra effort into raising this money.”

Until now, there were delays in such a dog being available to Victim Services in Red Deer because they had to borrow from the detachments in Camrose or Olds.

Ringo will be leased by Red Deer RCMP Victim Services though Edmonton-based assistance dog training school Dogs With Wings.

Elsewhere in central Alberta this weekend, St. Dominic Catholic High School is holding their graduation at the Lou Soppit Community Centre Friday night.

On Canada Day, 250 grads at Lacombe Composite will receive their diplomas.
