Kondro’s 34-save shutout lifts Rebels to Thanksgiving victory

The Red Deer Rebels had plenty to be thankful for on Monday.

Not only did the Rebels earn their fourth-straight victory, but they did so by beating their Central Division rival Edmonton Oil Kings 4-0 at the Centrium.

A big part of that success was goaltender Matthew Kondro, who finished with a 34-save shutout.

He said after the game that he couldn’t have done it without his teammates.

“The boys were awesome tonight. We played a great game, and they made it easy on me,” he said. “I felt I played well, but once again there weren’t many second rebounds, mostly just first shots. I give all credit to the boys; they were awesome.”

The Rebels also got a big performance from forward Cameron Kuzma, who finished with a Gordie Howe hat trick. Poul Andersen, Beckett Hamilton, and Kalder Varga all found the scoresheet as well.

Head coach Brent Kisio said the team worked hard and put together a full team effort.

He said from the first to the fourth line, everyone was playing hard, especially the defence.

“Our best guy, our goalie, played a great game tonight,” Kisio said. “He’s been good all year and always gives us a chance to win. We are finally finding some support to score some goals to support him as well.”

He added that the win is an important one as the Central Division standings are tight. Any time you can beat a divisional opponent is a plus. The Rebels currently lead the division with a 6-2-0-1 record.

“Any win is big, but against a divisional opponent it means more,” Kisio added.

After the first 20 minutes, the Rebels held a 2-0 lead.

Kuzma got them on the board first when he knocked in the rebound following a shot from Patrick Sopiarz just over a minute and a half into the game.

After that, Andersen, who continues to lead the WHL in scoring with 18 points in nine games, scored a power-play goal midway through the period. The puck landed in front of the net after it redirected off the end boards, and Andersen was there to knock it in.

In the second period, the Rebels notched another power-play goal with 6:50 remaining off the stick of Hamilton.

Rookie forward Cash Arcand-Vandale passed the puck in front of the net from the left corner to a wide-open Hamilton, who made no mistake. The assist was Arcand-Vandale’s first WHL point.

In the third period, forward Kalder Varga put the game away for good with a shot from the left circle the goalie did not expect.

The Rebels were without forward Kohen Lodge, who remains out with a lower-body injury. His timetable to return is to be determined. Meanwhile, Noah Chadi, Paxson Madill, Luke Jamieson, and Graeme Pickering did not suit up for the club.

Next up, the Rebels will welcome the Victoria Royals to the Centrium on Friday, Oct. 16, before heading to Calgary on Saturday, Oct. 17, to face the Hitmen.
