Three Hills RCMP charge Trochu man after evading police

Three Hills RCMP have arrested a man from Trochu after he fled from police earlier this month.

The 60-year-old man was charged with flight from police, unsafe storage of a firearm, driving an uninsured motor vehicle, and driving a motor vehicle without a subsisting certificate of registration.

Police say it was on July 3 at approximately 3:45 p.m. when Mounties observed a vehicle parked at a local gas station with expired registration.

Shortly after, the RCMP received a dispatch complaint about an impaired driver near the gas station. However, the complaint was deemed false, and police believe it was made to distract them from the parked vehicle.

Three Hills RCMP attempted a traffic stop with the vehicle after it left the gas station, but it fled at a high rate of speed on a gravel road.

The driver and passenger were identified using CCTV from the gas station, and ultimately police were able to identify the address of the driver.

As a result, on July 15 at approximately 10:39 a.m., RCMP obtained a warrant to enter the house of the driver in Trochu.

They located and arrested the driver and, while inside the residence, located an unsecured firearm.

The man has since been taken before a Justice of the Peace and released from custody with conditions.

His next court date is Aug. 14, 2026, at Alberta Court of Justice in Drumheller.

RCMP added that the false report is still under investigation, and a charge of public mischief is anticipated.
