Red Deer region unemployment rate decreases in June

In June, Alberta’s unemployment rate was tied for the fourth highest in Canada with Ontario. The national unemployment rate, at 6.5 per cent, was 0.1 percentage points lower than the previous month.

Key highlights per the Government of Alberta:

There were 2,677,300 people employed in Alberta in June 2026, an increase of 78,500 (+3.0 per cent) compared to June 2025 and an increase of 6,800 from the previous month. Nationally, Canada recorded an increase in employment of 18,200 (+0.1 per cent) from the previous month.
Alberta’s unemployment rate increased by 0.4 percentage points to 7.0 per cent, higher than the national rate of 6.5 per cent.
Employment increased in the private sector (+12,200) but decreased in the public sector (-4,100) and among the self-employed (-1,500).
Full-time employment decreased by 4,400 while part-time employment increased by 11,300 from the previous month.
The largest monthly employment gains were in wholesale and retail trade (+4,800); construction (+4,400); and other services (except public administration) (+1,900).
The largest monthly employment decreases were in transportation and warehousing (-3,800); utilities (-1,900); and manufacturing (-1,800).

Indigenous statistics:

In June 2026, the unemployment rate for Indigenous peoples living off reserve in Alberta was 13.8 per cent. This is an increase of 1.0 percentage point from May 2026 and an increase of 3.4 percentage points from the same month last year.
Employment increased for Indigenous women (+1,300) and decreased for Indigenous men (-1,400) between May 2026 and June 2026.
Between May 2026 and June 2026, employment rose for Indigenous youth (15 to 24 years old) (+2,300), shrunk among core-aged Indigenous workers (25 to 54 years old) (-4,700), and increased for older Indigenous workers (55+ years) (+2,300).
