Jun 29, 2026 | 7:46 PM

TORONTO — George Springer scored on a triple and an error in the first inning, and the Toronto Blue Jays defeated the New York Mets 2-1 on Monday.

Mets outfielders Juan Soto and A.J. Ewing combined to misplay Springer’s line drive to left field, allowing the designated hitter to score. It was Springer’s first triple of the season.

The win snapped a six-game losing streak for the Blue Jays (40-45), while the Mets (35-50) have lost nine of their last 10.

Blue Jays right-hander Trey Yesavage (4-3, 3.34 ERA) held the Mets to one run on three hits, including a home run by Francisco Lindor, over 6 2/3 innings with three strikeouts. Relievers Mason Fluharty and Tyler Rogers followed, while Louis Varland earned his 17th save.

Bo Bichette made his first return to Toronto since departing as a free agent and signing with the Mets. He went 0-for-4.

Mets starter Sean Manaea (1-3, 4.71 ERA) allowed two earned runs on three hits over 5 2/3 innings, with four strikeouts and two walks. Austin Warren and Joey Gerber pitched in relief.

TAKEAWAYS

Blue Jays: The Blue Jays will be without Addison Barger for a couple more weeks after the outfielder suffered a stress reaction in his back while rehabbing his elbow injury, Blue Jays manager John Schneider said Monday.

Mets: Bichette received multiple standing ovations from the 41,634 fans at Rogers Centre, including after a tribute video before the game and ahead of his first at-bat. Bichette tipped his cap and waved to the crowd to acknowledge the support.

KEY MOMENT

Soto whiffed on Springer’s line drive to left field, allowing the ball to bounce all the way to the outfield wall. Backing him up in centre field, Ewing then dropped the ball while fielding it, recording the error, allowing Springer to score.

KEY STAT

The Blue Jays didn’t allow a first-inning run for the first time during their current 10-game homestand. In their previous seven games, they gave up at least a run in every first inning.

UP NEXT

Blue Jays right-hander Kevin Gausman (4-6, 4.36 ERA) will start Tuesday’s game, while the Mets will counter with right-hander Nolan McLean (4-5, 4.03).
