Replica firearm

Sylvan Lake RCMP charge youth with weapons offences

Jun 25, 2026 | 11:56 AM

Sylvan Lake RCMP have charged one youth following an investigation that unveiled the individual was in possession of a replica firearm.

Police say on June 16 at 9 p.m., officers attended a call that a male youth allegedly pointed a firearm out the passenger side window at a pedestrian who was walking on a sidewalk.

The suspect vehicle was located by RCMP and the occupants were arrested without incident.

Throughout the investigation, a replica-style firearm (CO2 air pistol) was located and seized from the vehicle.

As a result, the individual youth was charged with two counts of pointing a firearm and possession of a weapon dangerous to the public.

“I would like to remind the youth of our community that it may seem harmless by having possession of imitation firearms; however, pointing these weapons will result in a police response, and charges can be laid,” said  Staff Sgt. Peden, Sylvan Lake Detachment Commander.

“In this case, there was no risk to the public, and Sylvan Lake remains a very safe community. The appearance of airsoft, CO2, or play guns can be very similar to a real firearm. Police will respond to the report and will treat the call as if a real firearm is being used. Public safety is our number one concern and priority. Given the current environment across Canada, these matters are taken seriously.”

The identity of the youth accused will not be released as it is protected by the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

The youth was released to appear in the Alberta Court of Justice in Red Deer on July 16.
