Red Deer karate athletes shine at national championship

Red Deer karate athletes helped Team Alberta bring home a hefty and rather shiny haul from the recent ISKF Karate National Championship in Calgary.

Red Deer’s delegation included 22 athletes representing Shotokan Karate Club, and 14 representing Sakura Karate Do.

Together, they helped Team Alberta earn an impressive 35 medals: 9 gold, 11 silver, and 15 bronze.

Sakura head instructor, Sensei Geovanni Gutierrez, noted that special congrats go to Emma Gutierrez Cano, who captured four gold medals in the 13–14-year-old Black Belt division, and was awarded one of the tournament’s Junior Grand Champion trophies.
