Red Deer Catholic hosts Indigenous families dinner and sharing circles to help form 3-year strategic plan

Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools and the Indigenous Education Services (IES) Team recently hosted the Indigenous families dinner and sharing circles to help form the division’s three-year strategic plan for Indigenous education.

The event was held on May 21, which brought together students, families, staff, and community leaders.

The event not only helped shape the upcoming strategic plan but also celebrated the comprehensive services and opportunities the IES team provides to Indigenous students.

“Gathering to share a meal and sit in a circle is a traditional and sacred way to bring hearts and minds together. Seeing the youth, families, and division leadership listening to one another with open minds gives us great hope for the path ahead,” said Elder Theresa Corky Larsen-Jonasson.

As a result, the feedback received in the sharing circles will be used to directly inform the goals, initiatives, and support structures of the division’s three-year strategic plan for Indigenous education.

“This event was a powerful reminder of the strength found in our community. The Board of Trustees is deeply committed to ensuring that Indigenous voices are not just heard, but are foundational to the future direction of our school division,” added Board Chair Chris Andrew.

“True reconciliation and educational excellence begin with listening. The insights shared by our families and Elders last week provide invaluable guidance as we build a meaningful, impactful 3-year strategic plan,” said Superintendent Rhonda Nixon.

“Our goal is to ensure that families and community members feel they are supported, valued, empowered, heard and have a voice at the table. Walking alongside our community to co-create the future of Indigenous Education in RDCRS is an honour,” explained Jonathan Mauro, Indigenous Education Services Coordinator. “RDCRS Indigenous Education Services ensures that we listen to and are guided by our Elders and Indigenous Community when supporting Indigenous Education and our Indigenous students and families.”
