The official launch of the Red Deer RCMP’s Drone as First Responder (DFR) program is on the horizon.

In the meantime, police say drone pilots have been honing their skills.

From May 19-21, the pilots were trained on the new drones and on the regulations that govern the use of drones for emergency response, as well as ensuring all drone operations respect the privacy of the citizens of Red Deer.

“A total of 14 drone pilots in Red Deer participated in the training and received certificates for completing the course,” as stated in a media release. “The RCMP DFR program will be carried out as outlined by Transport Canada regulations. Public safety and the right to privacy remain the top priority for the Red Deer City DFR.”
