Aspiring teachers from RDP help out with Red Deer Public

Pre-service teachers recently had a chance to get hands-on experience with Red Deer Public Schools.

The soon-to-be teachers are Bachelor of Education students at Red Deer Polytechnic, who came in to help deliver math lessons at West Park Elementary and Central Middle.

“We are fortunate to have the opportunity to partner with Red Deer Polytechnic for this initiative,” said Chana MacDonald, Learning Services Coordinator for Red Deer Public Schools, adding staff were inspired with new ideas because of the initiative.

“The lessons were interactive, thoughtful and demonstrated a strong understanding of how to make math meaningful and accessible for all students.”

Many of the aspiring teachers share that their experience strengthened their confidence and passion for teaching.

“As an instructor, this experience was a powerful reflection of the course’s purpose, supporting future educators in building confidence to teach math, fostering growth mindsets, and creating meaningful learning experiences for students,” said Penny Vollmin, who initiated the project as a Numeracy Instructor in the Education degree program at Red Deer Polytechnic.

“The success of this initiative has led to interest in expanding similar opportunities into other subject areas, including Language Arts, Social Studies, and Science.”

The partnership between Red Deer Public and RDP is one which will continue in the name of innovation and collaboration, the division says.
