Canada beats Finland, U.S. at world mixed doubles curling championship

GENEVA — Canada’s Colton and Kadriana Lott finished Sunday with a pair of wins thanks to a 7-3 victory over the United States.

Canada (3-0) also defeated Finland 10-4 earlier in the day.

After the Canadians held a 4-1 edge at the midway point, the Americans answered with two points in the fifth end to cut the deficit to one. Canada then scored two in the sixth and one in the seventh before the U.S. conceded the final end.

Earlier in the day, after falling behind 3-0 after the opening end, the Canadians scored five in the the second followed by two in the third and one in the fourth to swiftly take an 8-3 lead over Finland. After the Finns answered with one in the fifth, Canada tacked on another two in the sixth before Finland conceded the final two ends.

“I think we’re quite happy with how we’ve played up to this point. Obviously, we will make some minor adjustments, but it’s going to be like that all week,” Colton Lott said. “I think for us, it’s trying to get a handle on the ice as soon as we can and then motoring through that and trying to really capitalize on the misses and get the right angles.”

The Canadians opened the tournament with a 6-4 win over South Korea on Saturday.

Canada will meet the reigning world champions and Olympic mixed bronze medallists in Italy’s Stefania Constantini and Amos Mosaner (3-0), in their only game of the day on Monday.

“It will be huge to play a big team like that. We know what we’re capable of, and we know we will have to come out strong, and we’ll push through to the end. We’ll need to make a few big shots and then see what happens,” Kadriana Lott said.

The Lotts, from Gimli, Man., have won two gold, two silver and a bronze at the Canadian mixed doubles championships since 2019. However, they are looking to earn Canada its first world mixed doubles title.
