“We talked about this with the kids: any time you play a 32-team tournament, it’s a big mountain to climb, and you know you’ll probably have to win every single game,” said Huseby on the phone Tuesday, giving his team’s opponents their flowers.

“Our playoff schedule, we played a really tough North Shore team from Comox, B.C. who hadn’t lost, then a really good Saskatoon team, and again, a really tough Kelowna team, so it was a big-time challenge to win, but it’s a tip of the cap to the players; they left it all out there.”

The semi against Saskatoon also included coming back from a 4-0 deficit.

Goaltender Paxton Ryan, who played in half the games, plus defenseman Chase Bosse, who had two assists, were named first-team tournament all-stars.

Huseby added it was an honour to represent Hockey Alberta so well at a tournament which featured teams from across western Canada.

The tournament also featured a U13AA co-ed division, and a female division.

On the AA side, the Red Deer Proshot Chiefs finished 2-1-0 in round robin play, then lost in a B semi. The Olds Grizzlys went 1-2-0 and lost in the C side quarterfinal.

On the female side, the Central Alberta Twins, based in Red Deer, went 0-3 in round robin action, and won the D final.
