Maskwacis man arrested on drug trafficking related charges

The Wetaskiwin RCMP has arrested a 22-year-old man from Maskwacis with drug trafficking related charges after a traffic stop on Tuesday.

The individual has been charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking and possession of proceeds of crime.

The traffic stop on June 10 took place after Wetaskiwin RCMP Crime Reduction Unit officers observed a known offender driving a Hyundai Venue.

After a check revealed he did not have a driver’s license, police stopped the vehicle and while interacting with the occupants, determined there were drugs in the vehicle.

Police then arrested both people in the vehicle and after a search, authorities say they found approximately 27 grams of fentanyl, 53 grams methamphetamine, and other items consistent with drug trafficking.

“Fentanyl and other drugs cause significant harm to our community,“ said Cpl. John Learn of the Wetaskiwin RCMP Crime Reduction Unit. “By proactively focusing our enforcement efforts on these known offenders we can have the largest impact.”

The Maskwacis resident was taken before a Justice of the Peace and remanded into custody with his next court date set for June 12 at the Alberta Court of Justice in Wetaskiwin.

The other occupant of the vehicle, who can’t be named until charges are laid, has two charges pending for possession for the purpose of trafficking.
