Ponoka mayor praises community for response to fire that destroyed six homes

Town of Ponoka Mayor Kevin Ferguson is commending the community spirit and generosity he’s seen after six family homes were destroyed in a fire last week.

On May 6 around 6:20 p.m., Ponoka County Emergency Services responded to a fire at a six-unit townhouse row in the Riverside area, near 46 Street and Highway 53.

Two engines and an aerial truck were dispatched, with the first engine arriving on the scene within 10 minutes, Donna Noble, Director of Emergency Management, shared.

Lacombe fire services were called in to assist with the blaze and were on scene for about an hour. Ponoka County services were on scene until about 11 p.m.

Noble said the fire appears to have started in one of the middle suites before encompassing the neighbouring units. The cause is still under investigation.

The two centre units were completely destroyed and severe damage to the remaining four have resulted in a complete evacuation of all six units. While there were no staff or civilian injuries reported, Noble said some pets unfortunately died in the fire.

While the situation was devastating, Mayor Ferguson says it prompted an “overwhelming and immediate outpouring of strength and caring from our community.”

Local restaurants, thrift spots and general stores donated food, clothing and other essentials, and community members have been stepping up with monetary donations as well.

“While I’m not surprised by the response from our citizens – because that’s what we do in Ponoka; we look after each other – I couldn’t be prouder of this community,” Ferguson said.

He also extended gratitude to to emergency services and its volunteer firefighters, as the structure fire followed a busy afternoon fighting two grass fires as well.

“Despite how tired they must have been, they immediately stepped up to respond to this third fire – because that’s what they do and we’re so lucky to have them in our community,” he commented.

Donations of cash or gift cards for the fire victims can be dropped off at Ponoka Family and Community Support Services (5006 52 Avenue). The department advises it does not have space to store physical items that may be donated.
