Rebels suffer heartbreaking loss to Broncos

Mar 8, 2025 | 10:17 PM

The Red Deer Rebels gave it their all but fell short 3-2 in an important matchup with the Swift Current Broncos on Saturday at the Centrium.

The loss puts the Rebels playoff hopes on the brink of elimination. With only seven games left (14 possible points) the Rebels trail the Broncos by 13 points for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

Head coach Dave Struch said postgame that it was a difficult loss for the team to handle.

“In the end, we’re really disappointed with the loss but not disappointed with the effort. The effort was there for sure,” Struch said.

“There’s no question we had a lot of opportunities, grade A opportunities to score and we didn’t. Really, they didn’t have a lot of opportunities but they did score on break downs by us, individual battles that we lost, and they took advantage of it.”

Broncos goaltender Reid Dyck had a big night in net making 35 saves on 37 shots. Meanwhile, rookie netminder Peyton Shore made 26 saves on 29 shots.

“[Shore] was good. He gave us a chance to win a hockey game but I think in the end we needed to be better offensively when we had those opportunities,” Struch added.

Red Deer scored the first goal of the game just over eight minutes into the second period. Forward Nishaan Parmar scored his first as a member of the Rebels on a rebound opportunity in front of the net. The Surrey, B.C. native knocked in the loose puck following a shot from Jack Bousquet.

However, 19 seconds later the Broncos tied the game off the stick of Brady Birnie, who was fed by Clarke Caswell while cutting to the net.

The Broncos took their first lead of the game later in the middle frame, scored by former Rebel Trae Wilke with a little over seven minutes left in the period.

Forward Beckett Hamilton tied it with 17:44 left in the game on a shot through traffic that beat Dyck in the top right corner of the net.

The Broncos broke the tie to lead 3-2 on the powerplay with 12:06 to go. Forward Luke Mistelbacher powered in a one-timer from the left circle off the feed from Caswell.

Red Deer pulled the goalie late in an effort to tie it but were unable to find the equalizer.

Next up, the Rebels head on a road trip that begins in Saskatchewan early in the week. They make a stop in Moose Jaw on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. followed by a matchup in Swift Current on Wednesday.

“Keep moving forward, we’ve got to believe,” Struch added. “We’re not eliminated yet so the message is really clear. Find the positive energy so we can come out and win a game on Tuesday.”
