Rebels fall to Tigers in 7-1 blow out at Centrium

Mar 7, 2025 | 10:15 PM

The Red Deer Rebels struggled on both ends of the ice on Friday night in a 7-1 loss to the Medicine Hat Tigers.

They had their hands full against the Eastern Conference leading Tigers, who exploded on offence. Forward Ryder Ritchie had three goals and two assists and Gavin McKenna had a goal and three assists.

Meanwhile, Tigers goaltender Harrison Meneghin made 29 saves on 30 shots. All of that combined led to a tough loss in front of the home crowd at the Centrium.

“It was really tough,” said head coach Dave Struch. “Not enough guys. We didn’t have anybody show up in the first. We had some guys get on board in the second to start rowing the boat and in the third a little bit more but too many guys didn’t show up at all.”

Rookie forward Nolan Schmidt was the lone goal scorer for the Rebels but the team struggled to create offence, especially on the man advantage. Red Deer had seven powerplay opportunities but were held scoreless.

“We just didn’t have the work ethic. Without work ethic you can’t skate. We didn’t have the focus and without that you can’t pass, you can’t stick handle, you can’t shoot, so you can’t even get to a system,” he added. With courage you can have all of that stuff.”

The Tigers scored a minute and a half into the game after a bad bounce off the end boards. Ritchie fired a shot into the open net after the puck bounced in front of the net following a shot that redirected off the glass.

They added an insurance goal nearly eight minutes into the game scored by defenceman Josh Van Mulligen who was fed in the slot by Ritchie.

Medicine Hat’s third marker of the period came on the five-on-three powerplay later in the frame. Rookie forward Liam Ruck tipped a point shot from McKenna past the goaltender to lead 3-0.

Red Deer was awarded a five-on-three powerplay of their own but were unable to capitalize.

A little over three minutes into the second period, the Tigers made it 4-0 with Ritchie’s second of the game on a breakaway goal.

Red Deer added their first of the game a minute and a half later, scored by Schmidt. He banked in a shot off the back of Meneghin and in.

However, the momentum boost for Red Deer was short lived. At the midway point Tigers forward Hunter St. Martin scored his 37th of the season in front alone off the pass from McKenna.

In the third period, the Tigers notched two more goals to seal the deal. McKenna scored his 33rd of the year followed by Ritchie’s third goal of the evening.

Next up, the Rebels will host the Swift Current Broncos at the Centrium on Saturday night at 7 p.m. They’ll look to get back in the win column.

They remain 11 points back from the Broncos who hold the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Red Deer now has just eight games remaining.

“We played better in the third period with the exception of two goals but we got some positive energy there,” Struch said. “We have to build a little off that. We addressed it just after the game and we’ve got to get ready for a big game tomorrow night.”
