Sledge Hockey Try It event a success

Feb 22, 2025 | 2:57 PM

A free Sledge Hockey Try It event held at the G.H. Dawe Community Centre on Saturday provided those interested in the sport a unique opportunity.

The event was held in honour of the 20th anniversary of Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities and put on by Para Hockey Alberta.

From noon to 1:15 p.m., athletes of all ages were strapped into a sled and made their way around the ice for the first time on a sled.

Ray Wasdal, Team Jigger Board Director and Central Alberta Sledge Hockey Program coordinator, said they try to promote the game as best as they can and hold try it events with help from sponsors.

“As many of these events we can do are great to grow the sport,” he said. “Every Thursday from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. we have a try it for the kids right here at the Dawe and then we have some Friday nights as well.”

Wasdal said they had such a good turnout today for the event because of their efforts in getting the word out in the community. Over the past year, they started visiting schools to promote the game.

“The beauty of sledge hockey is it’s for everybody,” he explained. “Whether they have some sort of a disability or are able bodied, it doesn’t matter. Everybody of all ages is welcome to play. We actually have an 85 year old gentleman in there right now and he’s loving it.”

It’s a unique sport to try for the first time. Wasdal said initially you may feel like you want to tip over but that’s why they give you all the necessary protective equipment. He added that when people do try the sport, it doesn’t take long for them to enjoy it.

“If you try it, you may find that you love it right away and something you want to do on a regular basis,” he said. “Most people once they’ve tried it, they love it.”

Ray Jennings was one of the many who decided to try the sport. His initial thoughts was how challenging it was but after some time, it became a lot of fun.

“It’s definitely not easy,” he said. “However, I could see myself continue to play it if time permits. I’m sure it’s a riot once you get into an actual game.”
