Extreme cold warning issued for Red Deer and area

Feb 18, 2025 | 8:55 AM

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has issued an extreme cold warning for the City of Red Deer and surrounding areas.

Extremely cold wind chill values between minus 40 and minus 45 are occurring, although temperatures are expected to moderate somewhat during the day.

The extreme cold is expected to return tonight to some regions, but conditions should moderate by Wednesday afternoon, ECCC says.

Extreme cold puts everyone at risk, but risks are greater for young children, older adults, people with chronic illnesses, people working or exercising outdoors, and those without proper shelter.

ECCC advises residents to dress warmly; dress in layers that you can remove if you get too warm, and the outer layer should be wind resistant. It’s also advised to cover up as much exposed skin as possible, as frostbite can develop within minutes, especially with wind chill.

Remember, if it’s too cold for you to stay outside, it’s too cold for your pet to stay outside.

ECCC issues extreme cold warnings when very cold temperatures or wind chill creates an elevated risk to health such as frost bite and hypothermia.
