Rebels win third straight in victory over Warriors at home

Feb 7, 2025 | 10:27 PM

Don’t underestimate the importance of veteran leadership.

The Red Deer Rebels won their third straight contest on Friday night in a 4-2 win over the Moose Jaw Warriors at the Peavey Mart Centrium.

The trio of victories have been a result of strong teamwork but a factor that’s impossible to ignore has been the return of captain Ollie Josephson and Kalan Lind to the lineup, both of whom found the back of the net against the Warriors. Jhett Larson has also been back in the lineup since Jan. 25.

“It’s looked like our chemistry is starting to come, we’re playing better. We got some players back in Larson, Lind, and Josephson which are key additions,” said head coach Dave Struch.

“But I didn’t like the way we played [tonight] compared to our last few games. It is inconsistencies but there were some good things on top of those inconsistencies that helped us win a hockey game.”

Moving forward Struch hopes to see more consistency in his teams skating, finishing bodychecks, and completing plays on offence.

However, since all the moves made at the trade deadline, Struch has seen plenty of improvement from his team.

“You can see the energy. The new guys we got at the trade deadline have become leaders in the dressing room,” Struch added. “There is a positive energy. As hard as we are on the guys, they need to feel good about themselves because they are doing some really good things to win hockey games.”

Rebels got on the board first with 13:16 to go in the first period. Forward Samuel Drancak capitalized on a turnover in the defensive zone following a phenomenal backcheck by the Czechia native on the penalty kill.

He quickly turned up ice for a two-on-one opportunity while shorthanded and fired a perfectly placed wrist shot high on the glove side of Warriors netminder Matthew Hutchison.

Import forward Gleb Semenov scored his his first WHL goal with 7:04 remaining in the first period. The Moscow, Russia product buried an opportunity in front of the net after the bouncing puck landed on his stick.

The soon-to-be 18-year-old has suited up in nine games for the Rebels since he was claimed off OHL waivers by the club after the London Knights released him.

With just a few minutes left in the opening frame, the Rebels kept the Warriors scoreless despite having to kill off a five-on-three Moose Jaw powerplay. However, that didn’t come without a scare. The Warriors appeared to score with one and a half minutes left after they batted the puck out of the air. But after a review, the officials waived it off due to a high stick by the Warriors.

Red Deer added one more with 11.4 seconds left to take a 3-0 lead off the stick of Kalan Lind, who knocked in the rebound in front of the net on the powerplay following a shot from Ty Coupland.

Red Deer had the edge in the first but Moose Jaw made up some much-needed ground in the second period scoring a pair of goals.

The Warriors scored their first of the game with 17:38 to go. Forward Ethan Hughes made a move to the slot after he picked up the puck along the boards to score the unassisted marker.

They inched even closer less than 10 minutes later, when forward Krzysztof Macias hammered in a powerplay goal to cut the deficit to one. Macias was fed in the high slot and beat rookie goaltender Peyton Shore in the top corner. Shore made 18 saves on 20 shots in the victory.

The Rebels responded late in the third period when Josephson potted an empty netter to seal the deal in a 4-2 victory.

Lind explained it’s been a tough year for him injury-wise but has felt more comfortable since returning three games ago.

He’s certainly been a difference maker since his return notching two goals and an assist for three points.

“It’s nice being back in the lineup and getting to get my feet under me again. Ollie and Jhett are back in the lineup again so it’s nice to have an almost full lineup again,” he said.

“We’ve kind of been injured all year so it sucks that way but the guys have done a great job battling with guys out. We’re looking to make a playoff push so now it’s big time.”

The Rebels were without 20-year-old defenceman Jace Weir who’s out week-to-week after he was taken out of the game on Jan. 25 after sliding into the end boards following a hit. Forward Jaxon Fuder is also out week-to-week with an upper-body injury and defenceman Jake Missura is out day-to-day with an upper-body injury.

Next up, the Rebels will look to make it four straight wins against a tough Lethbridge Hurricanes squad at the Centrium on Saturday at 7 p.m.

Red Deer has a 19-25-4-2 record and are currently 10 points out of a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
