Red Deer RCMP seize 53 cartons of illegal cigarettes following investigation

Apr 14, 2026 | 1:18 PM

Red Deer RCMP have arrested a 40-year-old man after an investigation into the sale of illegal tobacco at a local business.

Police say they completed their investigation after receiving a tip from the Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission.

The tip led them to conduct a search warrant at a business on Gaetz Avenue in downtown Red Deer on March 11.

As a result, they seized 53 cartons of unstamped cigarettes and arrested the Red Deer resident, who was charged with possession of unstamped tobacco for the purpose of selling.

“While the sales of unstamped cigarettes may not seem like a particularly harmful crime, the sale of illicit tobacco has real impacts on our community,” the RCMP stated in a media release. “These products may not meet health and safety standards, and their sale undermines the local businesses that operate legitimately.”

He was released on an undertaking with conditions and is scheduled to appear in the Alberta Court of Justice in Red Deer on Apr. 29, 2026.
