RCMP seek assistance in locating second-degree murder suspect

The Alberta RCMP are seeking assistance in locating Derrick Phazar Whitford, a 27-year-old resident of the O’Chiese First Nation, as he has been charged with second-degree murder.

The suspect has been charged by the Alberta RCMP Major Crimes unit in relation to a homicide reported in November 2024 on the O’Chiese First Nation. RCMP have determined the victim to be 18-year-old O’Chiese resident Travis Strawberry.

RCMP report the suspect was formally charged on Jan. 28 and is also wanted on several unrelated offences including breach of probation, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, flight from peace officer, robbery and several firearms related offences.

Police say attempts to locate the individual have had negative results, and they believe he may be in the area of O’Chiese First Nation or Sunchild First Nation, and has ties to Red Deer and Edmonton areas.

The suspect is described as:

  • Medium complexion
  • 6 ft tall
  • Approximately 138 pounds
  • Black hair
  • Brown eyes

In addition to his given name, he has been known to use the names Sunny, Sonny, Derrick Dumais, Derrick Whitford-Dumais, or a combination of these.

Whitford is believed to be armed and dangerous. If you see him, do not approach, and call 911 immediately.
