SEPTEMBER 10

Changing the narrative on World Suicide Prevention Day

Sep 9, 2024 | 3:20 PM

September 10 marks World Suicide Prevention Day, and the Outreach Centre will be holding a few events filled with information, conversation, and self-care to mark the occasion and change the narrative on suicide.

A 2021 study by Alberta Health Services says that each year, more Albertans die by suicide than the number of people who die in motor vehicle collisions.

To bring awareness to this fact and comfort to those impacted, The Outreach Centre is holding the following events:

  • 9:00 a.m.: Coffee Check-In at Stems Flowers and Cafe – Take a moment to yourself to enjoy some coffee and connect with others in a supportive space.
  • *10:00 a.m.: Information Session at The Outreach Centre – In-person session about what the Outreach Centre does and services it offers related to suicide prevention.
  • *11:00 a.m.: Outdoor Yoga at The Outreach Centre – Hosted by Breathing Room Yoga and Psycle, participants should bring their own yoga mat or towel.
  • 12:00 p.m.: Lunch at The Outreach Centre – Will include sandwiches from Bo’s Sandwich Club and bottled water. Available by donation, while supplies last.
  • *1:00 p.m.: Walk and Talk at The Outreach Centre – Walk with Outreach Centre employees on the paved path along Taylor Drive, just south of their building.
  • *2:00 p.m.: Information Session at The Outreach Centre – Virtual session about suicide warning signs.
  • 3:00 p.m.: Social Hour at Troubled Monk – Come together for good company, meaningful conversation, and connection.

*Denoted events are free to attend.

For those who have lost a loved one to suicide, the Living Beyond Suicide Support Group begins September 12, 2024. To register, contact Dawne at 403-347-2480 or dawne@caoutreach.ca.

Members of the Alberta government shared their support this prevention day.

Dan Williams, minister of mental health and addiction, shared, “Today is an opportunity both to show support for those who are struggling and to raise awareness by breaking the silence in order to ensure society does not forget the tragic loss of every single life from all forms of suicide. Suicide is a complex issue, but it’s preventable. Understanding the risk factors, recognizing warning signs and knowing how to provide support can save lives. Our government is dedicated to creating an environment where every individual feels heard, valued and supported.”

Minister of Children and Family Services Searle Turton shared a similar sentiment, saying, “To any child, youth, parent or individual who may be feeling alone, know that your homes, schools, workplaces and communities are a better place because you are here. If you need someone to talk to, please reach out to speak to a mental-health professional online or in person. Help is available.”

If you or someone you know is at risk, please reach out for help.
