First Fridays: Artist Larry Reese to present farmer-focused exhibit

Residents are invited to experience Farm Friendly: Works by Larry Reese, running from August 13 to October 6, 2024 in the Kiwanis Gallery.

A First Friday Red Deer Opening night will be held on September 6 from 5:30-7:30 with the artist in attendance.

Organizers say the artist, Larry Reese, and his wife Tanya Ryga have lived just west of Sylvan Lake for decades. In their time there, officials say Reese has made connections with many of the farmers near him, who let him paint their lands en plein air, meaning outdoors.

“I find fascinating the challenges farm families face when confronting all types of weather conditions, from a beautiful summer day to the ravages of winter or the perils of wind, rain, hail and yes tornadoes,” says Reese in his artist statement. “I also wanted to share the joy I get from attending a farmer’s market or just sitting near a field en plein air painting the brilliant yellow hues of a canola field in bloom.”

Officials say the works in his exhibit are crafted to reflect the diversity of the landscapes and the seasons, and the range of challenges farmers face in providing the world with food while maintaining respect for their land through snapshots of their daily lives.

Many of the paintings are started outdoors in the field before being brought to the studio to be completed.
