Officials say the reflecting pool, north cascade fountains and dome fountain were originally built in the 1970s. To complete the new reflecting pool and dome fountain, crews used two types of Canadian granite, the majority of which was repurposed from the old fountain and pool.

According to the government, upgrades to the legislature grounds are divided into two phases. Phase one included the refurbishment of the reflecting pool and dome fountain. Phase two includes the “River” water feature concept as selected by Albertans in 2023, which is expected to be finished in 2025.

Alberta government quick facts

• The reflecting pool, north cascade fountains and dome fountain have been closed since 2020 due to age-related maintenance concerns.
• Demolition of the reflecting pool, plaza decking and north cascade fountains began in March 2023, and finished in August 2023, when construction on the new features began.
• For the reflecting pool and dome fountain upgrades:
• The depth of the new reflecting pool is approximately six inches.
• More than 2,700 cubic meters of concrete was poured on site.
• About 200 tonnes of rebar was delivered to site.
• The federal government is contributing $8 million through the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP) to the legislature grounds improvement project. The Government of Alberta is investing $2 million through ICIP and an additional $10 million from Alberta’s Capital Plan.
