Alberta NDP inviting Pride groups to consult on government gender policies

Jun 3, 2024 | 1:52 PM

Lizette Tejada, Alberta NDP Critic for Anti-Racism, Diversity and 2SLGBTQ+ Issues, has invited over 60 Pride and 2SLGBTQIA+ groups to join in a consultation and strategic planning session on what can be done to stop the UCP from implementing what they call regressive and draconian policy and legislation proposed for the fall.

“While Pride has rightfully become a time of celebration, we know many in the community do not forget its roots as a deeply political moment,” said Tejada. “This year in Alberta, we must return to those roots. With enough pushback, we hope the UCP does bow to pressure to change.”

Last month, the NDP says 14 Pride groups province-wide told premier Danielle Smith they were not welcome at their events, saying there was no reason to invite them to their celebrations while the government was “legislating against them”. The Alberta NDP says the number of Pride groups banning the UCP from their event continues to grow.

To commemorate the beginning of Pride month, the Alberta NDP unfurled a three-storey-high Pride Flag from their offices on the Alberta Legislature grounds.

“The minute we compromise the fundamental human rights of any group of marginalized Albertans, we put at risk the human rights of all groups and all Albertans,” said Alberta NDP Leader Rachel Notley at the flag unveiling. “We must care for those who are most vulnerable and at risk right now.”

Tejada pledged the Alberta NDP Official Opposition will use every legislative tool possible against the government’s policies and invited other organizations to join in a coalition.

The NDP says topics to be discussed at the consultation may include:

  • The current state of gender politics in Alberta
  • Discussion of the proposed UCP trans policies
  • The role of parents in gender-affirming health-care decisions for children
  • Tactics to stop the UCP from moving forward with their proposed legislation

The Zoom consultation will occur on Monday, June 17, 2024. Members of the Alberta NDP Caucus and participants who are willing will be made available for comment following.
