Walk the Talk event bringing local seniors and students together

May 28, 2024 | 3:19 PM

Three local organizations have partnered together to host a Walk the Talk event next month in support of both seniors and students.

What is Walk the Talk?

This is a partnership between SPARC, the Golden Circle and RDP and an opportunity for seniors to enjoy a casual conversation with a local student in Grade 5.

June 5 , 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Golden Circle

Why participate?

Benefits to a senior:

  • Participating in Walk the Talk creates a sense of purpose
  • Helps to develop a positive view of youth in Red Deer
  • Have some fun, be involved in your community, get fresh air
  • You never know the difference you may make in the life of a child – give them a chance to enjoy a visit with a positive adult

Benefits to a child:

  • This helps youth be valued by their community, which is one of the 40 Developmental Assets, and is generally rated quite low by youth
  • Helps youth feel they have a role to play in their community
  • Connecting with a positive adult
  • Creates a sense of purpose

What the research says:

The 40 Developmental Assets are research proven life experiences or building blocks which all children need to grow up healthy, caring, and responsible. When you participate in this walk as a positive role model, you are building these assets in local youth. The higher the number of assets a young person has, the more likely they will thrive. The fewer the number of these assets they have, the more likely they are to engage in risky behaviours. Help kids grow up great by being an asset builder!

Do I have to register?

No, we welcome any senior who would like to participate in this event. You will simply be paired up with a student in grade 5 and enjoy a conversation with them. Afterwards, enjoy some ice cream and play some giant lawn games.

What if I am unable to walk far?

The route is a short casual walk outside the Golden Circle on the trails. We invite you to participate even if you prefer to sit and talk with your partner.

What if it rains?

We have a back-up plan! We will be using the Servus Arena walking track if the weather is poor.
