Four central Alberta families became first-time homeowners at Habitat Red Deer’s home dedication ceremony on May 10.

These families will move into two new duplexes in the Evergreen neighbourhood, marking the 47th, 48th, 49th and 50th homes built by Habitat Red Deer in the central Alberta region.

The ceremony was a celebration of the completed buildings and the hard-working families who will call them home.

“Organizations like Habitat for Humanity are invaluable partners in our work to ensure that every Canadian has a safe place to call their own,” said Sean Fraser, minister of housing, infrastructure and communities. “I am proud that we were able to support these projects, and I wish these four families all the best as they start their next chapters in their new homes.”

In March 2023, the Government of Canada and Habitat for Humanity Canada announced an additional $25 million investment to build 500 new affordable homes across Canada over the next three years. This brought the total federal investment in Habitat for Humanity to $80.8 million through the Government of Canada’s Affordable Housing Fund.

Since 2019, the Government of Canada has made a total funding commitment of $1.3 million through the Affordable Housing Fund under the National Housing Strategy towards Habitat Red Deer projects, including

“We enthusiastically congratulate our four families as they begin a new journey in their lives as first-time homeowners,” says Karen Vavrek, Habitat Red Deer CEO.

“We know that having access to affordable homeownership helps families become more self-reliant and independent and in turn, helps communities like Red Deer become more prosperous. When families succeed, communities succeed and grow. We graciously thank all of our donors and volunteers for their generous contributions of time and resources given to this project.”

Habitat for Humanity Red Deer has been active in central Alberta since 1994 and has since built 50 homes in the region with the help of dedicated donors and volunteers.

The organization builds homes in partnership with qualifying low-income, working families through a no-down-payment, interest-free mortgage program.

Families are required to put many hours of sweat equity into the actual building of the home in order to qualify.
