Lacombe encouraging residents to treat water as precious resource

Apr 24, 2024 | 10:51 PM

Residents of Lacombe are being encouraged by the City and city council to remember this spring and summer that water is a precious resource.

The reminder comes as Alberta grapples with the possibility of severe drought once again, the province currently at stage four out of five in its water shortage management process.

The City of Lacombe notes that the water supply outlook for the Red Deer River Basin this year is currently considered average.

Neither interprovincial water-sharing agreements nor the North Red Deer River Water Services Commission recommends implementing water restrictions at this time, the City notes.

With currently low per-person consumption rates in Lacombe, residents can maintain good water habits without the restrictions being implemented in other parts of the province.

“Council encourages residents to be mindful in their water use habits, particularly over the summer months,” Mayor Grant Creasey says. “Our residents’ ongoing dedication to water conservation is admirable, and I’m sure that will continue going forward as Albertans face uncertain drought conditions across the province.”

If a provincial state of emergency is declared, it could impact water license holders in the Red Deer River Basin, Lacombe included.

According to the City of Lacombe, the North Red Deer River Water Services Commission (NRDRWSC), of which Lacombe is a member, is a significant license holder with the fourth-largest total water allocation from the Red Deer River Basin. The City of Lacombe’s long-term water needs are secured through the NRDRWSC’s water license, which presently utilizes 22 per cent of its total capacity.

Council has thus endorsed a four-stage water conservation guideline to be deployed as necessary. The initial stage would involve voluntary restrictions focusing on advisories, education, and information sharing.
