Sunterra Sun Run set for May 11 in Red Deer needs more runners

Apr 17, 2024 | 1:27 PM

The first annual Sunterra Sun Run goes down May 11 in Red Deer, but organizers say they need more runners to sign up.

The event will feature multiple distances plus live music on stage, beer gardens, and a fun zone for kids outside the Bower-Kin Community Centre on Boyce Street — as long as it’s sunny. The races go rain or shine, but if it’s wet, the music and partying afterwards will move to Bo’s Bar and Stage.

It’s all to benefit the Bower Community Association which is undertaking major renovations to its facility, primarily to the kitchen. It also maintains basketball and tennis courts, and offers indoor programming for youth, among other things.

Event Coordinator and Bower Community Association board member, Val Jensen, explains further.

“The Sun Run is a small part of it; the new ‘Bubble Run’ is going to be fun for the kids, and Dairy Queen is supporting that. We’ll be running the trails around Bower and back to the fields here at the community hall,” she says.

“We really want to put on a reasonable event. The kids runs are 100 metres and 500 metres, then there are the three kilometre and five kilometre distances.”

There’ll be a lot of freebies too for runners, including fresh goods from Sunterra.

Plus, the event will start at 9 a.m. with the annual City of Red Deer Rising Sport Stars awards.

Families are also invited to plant trees with the Bower Place Community Association as part of a longstanding Mother’s Day weekend tradition.

Registration for the run is $20 for kids under 18, and $30 for those 18 and older.
