Former teacher convicted of sexual interference given Conditional Sentence

Apr 16, 2024 | 10:14 AM

A former teacher accused of sexually assaulting a central Alberta youth a year-and-a-half ago, has been given an 18-month Conditional Sentence Order (CSO).

Tyler Kanten, 44, was sentenced in Red Deer Court of Justice on April 9, 2024, after being convicted on one count of sexual interference, while a charge of sexual assault was withdrawn.

Kanten’s conditions include house arrest, a curfew, attend Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, community service, assessment, counselling and treatment, and a prohibition of owning or being in possession of any weapons, among others.

It was on October 10, 2022, when Rocky Mountain House RCMP received a report of a recent sexual assault of a youth. As a result of the investigation, on Oct. 13, 2022, RCMP arrested Tyler Kanten. He was charged with sexual assault and sexual interference.

Mounties say Kanten was taken before a justice of the peace at that time where he was released on conditions.

Police noted that Kanten was a school teacher in Caroline, AB, at the time, but added that those offences did not occur at or involve a student at the school.

On October 14, 2022, Wild Rose School Division administration says it was informed that Tyler Kanten, a teacher employed at Caroline School, was arrested and charged with sexual offences.

Given the allegations, WRSD officials launched an internal review of the circumstances and said at the time they would take all necessary steps to ensure the safety of their students. WRSD officials confirmed to rdnewsNOW on Oct. 26, 2023, that Kanten was no longer employed by WRSD.
